This study was performed to compare the efficacy between a DNA chip method and a Hybrid-Capture II assay (HC-II) for detecting human papillomavirus in patients with intraepithelial lesions of the uterine cervix. From May, 2005, to June, 2006, 192 patients with abnormal colposcopic findings received cervical cytology, HC-II and HPV DNA chip tests, and colposcopic biopsy or conization. We compared the results of HC-II and HPV DNA chip in conjunction with liquid based cervical cytology (LBCC) and confirmed the results of biopsy or conization. The sensitivity of the HPV DNA chip test was higher than HC-II or LBCC. The HPV DNA chip in conjunction with LBCC showed higher sensitivity than any single method and higher sensitivity than HC-II with LBCC. We confirmed that the HPV DNA chip test was more sensitive for detecting HPV in cervical lesions than HC-II, and that it would provide more useful clinical information about HPV type and its multiple infections.

Combine hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma with pseudosarcomatous features is a rare primary liver tumor. We report a 46-year-old man who is a carrier of HBV and has presented intermittent severe abdominal pain on right upper quadrant for 6 days. Tumor markers, alpha-fetoprotein, CEA and CA19-9 were within normal ranges. Abdominal computed tomogram revealed a large heterogeneous mass in the posteroinferior segment of right liver without associated biliary dilatation and conglomerated, enlarged portocaval and peripancreatic lymph nodes. Right hepatectomy was performed with local lymph node dissection. The tumor, measuring 7.5 x 5.5 cm showed an ill demarcated round to oval shape and a variegated whitish yellow solid cut surface with necrosis. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of three components, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and undifferentiated sarcomatoid tumor cells. Immunohistochemically, hepatocellular carcinoma portion reacted positively with alpha-fetoprotein, cholangiocarcinoma portion reacted positively with bile duct-type cytokeratins (cytokeratin 7 and 19) and EMA. The pseudosarcomatous portion reacted with bile duct type cytokeratins and EMA. These findings suggested that pseudosarcomatous tumor cells may be with closely, associated primitive stem cells that can differentiate into the ductal epithelium.

Two cases of pulmonary atypical carcinoid tumor were diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. Although the cytologic features of atypical carcinoid tumor have been relatively well described, it is easy to confuse atypical carcinoid tumor with typical carcinoid tumor, small cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the lung. Atypical carcinoid tumor has been recognized as a distinct variant of pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma, with characteristic histopathologic and clinical features that separate it from both carcinoid and small cell carcinoma. The distinction of atypical carcinoid tumor from small cell carcinoma has important prognostic and therapeutic implications. The cytologic characteristics of atypical carcinoid tumor included polygonal to fusiform cells with a variable amount of lacy cytoplasm, oval nuclei with coarsely dispersed chromatin and frequent nucleoli, and mild pleomorphism. The malignant cells were arranged either in acinus-like clusters or in epithelial sheets.

Sarcomatoid carcinoma of prostate has been rarely reported and occasionally difficult to distinguish from a true sarcoma or carcinosarcoma. A case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the prostate, which has been occured in 61-year-old male patient is presented. The tumor consists of carcinomatous areas with epithelioid cells, sarcomatoid areas with spindle cells and foci of heterologous osteosarcoma component. The phenotypic nature of the tumor was confirmed immunohistochemically by positive reaction for cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, vimentin and prostate specific acid phosphatase in both sarcomatous and carcinomatous components.

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare neoplasm composed of both carcinoma and spindle sarcomatous area. Usually the carcinoma component is a squamous cell carcinoma but rarely adenocarcinoma or undifferentiated carcinoma is found. The histogenesis of the sarcomatous component is still unknown. A case of ulcerated polypoid lesion with a stalk in esophagus was reported. Microscopically it was composed of spindle shaped cells interminled with squamous cell carcinoma and small cell carcinoma nests. No distinct transition between spindle shaped cells and carcinoma are was observed. Immunoreactivity to cytokeratin was observed in both carcinomatous and spindle cell component, but electron microscopic examination failed to demonstrated desmosome or tonofilaments in spindle cells. Undifferentiated small cell nests were reactive to neuron specific enolase and contained membrane bounded secretory granule in electron microscopy.
